How can counseling help me? What happens in therapy?

How does counseling help?

Counseling is a collaboration between a professionally trained counselor and individuals seeking greater insight and understanding into their thoughts, feelings and behavior. The client sets their goals for counseling (i.e.-better communication in relationships, improved mood stability, healing trauma) and the counselor guides the client through the process of achieving these goals.

For some people, this happens quickly, and it only takes a few sessions to work through the issues that brought them to counseling. For others, it can take longer. It’s common for people to participate in counseling for a while, take a break and come back for a few sessions at some point in the future for a “tune up”.

By the time you have completed counseling you will be equipped with the tools you need to cope with adversity, manage your emotions in a healthy manner, have a better relationship with yourself, improve negative self-talk and have a greater sense of peace and happiness.

At A Path Forward, we are outcome-focused and develop plans based on the individual's need, and tailor those dynamically as we progress through the journey.

What is required of me in therapy?

Counseling is a commitment. It requires patience and motivation to work on yourself.  To achieve the maximum benefit, you’ll want to be completely honest with your counselor and practice the skills we are working on between sessions. You will be strongly encouraged to incorporate self-care into your daily life and practice self-compassion.

Like with anything in life, you get out what you put into counseling.  At A Path Forward, we will help structure a plan that meets your needs and equip you to gradually integrate these tools into your daily life.
